A Memorandum of Understanding Between Beirut Arab University and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Beirut Arab University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) in Egypt, which aims at holding mutual seminars and training workshops, in addition to exchanging scientific and cultural material. Both parties contribute to the funding of the projects stated in the Understanding through the exchange of delegations. The memorandum further facilitates the exchange of scientific and cultural references as well as the access to original manuscripts.

The Memorandum of Understanding  was signed by Prof. Dr. Amr Galal El Adawi, President of BAU, and Dr. Ismail Serage el Din, who holds an honorary PhD from BAU, and Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandria.

The Signing Ceremony was held on 19th December, 2013 at the Conference Hall at Beirut Campus and was attended by BAU Vice-Presidents, Prof. Dr. Hanafy Holail, Prof. Dr. Essam Osman, and Prof. Dr. Khaled Baghdady, as well as by the Head of Wakf El Bir Wal Ihsan, Mr. Tawfiq Houri, Secretary General Mr. Issam Houri, the Deans of the Faculties, in addition to the members of the Bibliotheca Alexandria Delegation, including Prof. Dr. Azza El Kholy, Ms. Lamia Abdel Fattah and Eng. Mohamed Farouk.

El Adawi welcomed the delegation, recalling previous collaborations between BAU and Bibliotheca Alexandria, and expressing his hope that the memorandum will successfully activate the exchange of expertise and experiences between the two parties.

In turn, Prof.Dr. Azza El Kholy gave a comprehensive presentation of the sectors, departments and centers at Bibliotheca Alexandria, and explained the mutual functions and mechanisms that aim at advancing scientific research and librarianship at the organizational level. Ms. Lamia Abdel Fattah gave a presentation on the developments witnessed by the Bibliotheca in its constant efforts to attain international and global standards.

Eng. Mohamed Farouk presented the Culturama Technique which he had invented. The technique documents the Egyptian Heritage by chronologically presenting panoramic images of Egyptian manuscripts and arts, thus explaining the impact these have on education and acculturation.

The ceremony was concluded by presenting Dr. Ismail Serag el Din, Director of Bibliotheca Alexandria, BAU Shield of Appreciation, received by Prof. Dr. Azza El Kholy on his behalf.

It is worth noting, that BAU includes 8 libraries in its campuses in Beirut, Debbieh and Tripoli, covering an area of 3500 m2. The libraries hold around 145.000 books, periodicals, references, journals and research works, and allow students’ access to a number of databases.
