BAU Celebrates the World Diabetes Day
13 November 2014The Faculty of Health Sciences at Beirut Arab University at Tripoli Campus celebrated the World Diabetes Day in collaboration with the Lebanese Diabetes Association. The event was attended by the BAU Vice-President for Tripoli Branch Affairs, Prof. Dr. Khaled Baghdady, the Faculty Directors, and a large crowd of students.
The event was also attended by HE Najib Mikati, represented by Dr. Azzam Oueida, Minister Ashraf Reifi, represented by Mr. Kamal Ziedeh, Minister Mohamed El Safadi, represented by Dr. Mostafa Helwa, MP Robert Fadel, represented by Dr. Saaeddine Fakhoury, Judge Nabil Sari, Dr. Nader Ghazal, Head of Tripoli Municipality, represented by Eng. Omar El Hoz, and Dr. Mohamed Sendid, Head of the Lebanese Diabetes Association.
Prof. Dr. Khaled Baghdadi stressed in his speech on the University’s efforts, through the academic staff-members and students of the Faculty of Health Sciences, and in collaboration with the Lebanese Diabetes Association, to organize this event. The aim is to disseminate awareness of Diabetes, means for prevention, and the ways to live with disease.
In turn, Prof. Dr. Mostafa Mourad, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, maintained that combating Diabetes lies in the promotion of partnerships and cooperation between the universities, in particular the Faculties of Health Sciences, together with the Local and International Institutions concerned with Diabetes. He stated that it is also essential to coordinate with the public authorities, the NGO sectors and the international organizations concerned, as well as the International Diabetes Federation and its representatives, such as the Lebanese Diabetes Association.
Dr. Mohamed Sendid, President of the Lebanese Diabetes Association, highlighted in his speech the message sent by the President of the Federation, Sir Michael Hurst. He focused on the efforts that need to be exerted in awareness raising and in care, to bring Diabetes under control. He further praised the commitment of International Societies in providing support and solidarity for Diabetics.
Sendid also explained the annual theme of the World Diabetes Day, namely “Healthy Living and Diabetes”. He explained that the rising rates of diabetes is attributable to unhealthy food, and stressed on the need to reconsider nutrition and eating habits, as well as the need for health education programs.
