“Be Smarter than the ZIKA” Lecture at the Faculty of Medicine at Beirut Arab University
03 March 2016The Faculty of Medicine at Beirut Arab University organized an awareness Lecture for the students about the “Zika” Disease, which had been lately an issue of debate and panic all over the world.
The lecture was held on the 3rd of March 2016, and delivered by Gynaecologist and Obstetrician Dr. Salah Malas entitled “Be smarter than the Zika”.
In his lecture, Dr. Malas explained about the “Zika” stating that it is an anthropoid flavivirus that causes a major outbreak and is spread mainly in South America.
In February 2016, the “World Health Organization” considered “Zika” as an international threat. He explained that the mosquito that is responsible for this virus is called “Ades Aegyptie” and the mode of transmission is via the bite of this mosquito.
Dr. Malas showed in his PowerPoint Presentation that non-purulent conjunctivitis, arthritis, rash and low grade fever are the major symptoms of this disease and the complications of Zika are microcephaly, fetal losses, and guillain-barré syndrome.
He stated that the prevention of this disease especially to pregnant women is not to travel to endemic areas.
At the end of the lecture, a session for questions and answers were opened to students.
