Organ Donation and Transplantation A Lecture by World-Renowned Surgeon Mehmet Haberal at BAU
15 May 2015Beirut Arab University hosted Prof. Mehmet Haberal, the world-renowned organ transplantation surgeon, Professor of Surgery Founder and Founder President, Baskent University in Turkey, Founder and President of Institute of Transplantation and Gene Sciences , Founder and President, Turkish Transplantation Society Founder and President, Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation for a lecture entitled “Organ Donation and Transplantation”. Prof. Haberal discussed major highlights explaining the importance of organ transplantation, the religious opinions on the issue, and the various surgeries that changed the lives of patients. He also pointed out that there were many more on waiting lists, firmly believing that there can be a new life full of hope.
The lecture which was held on the 14th of May 2015, was attended by Prof. Amr Galal El Adawi, President of BAU, Prof. Nadey Hakim, world-renowned Organ Transplantation Surgeon, the deans of faculties, academic staff-members, Ms. Farida Younan, representative of the Organs Donation Society, and a crowd of students, physicians and interested people.
After the National Lebanese Anthem and the BAU Anthem were played, Prof. Hania Nakkash, Dean of Postgraduate Studies and Research, welcomed Prof. Haberal and gave a quick review of his professional career and his role in establishing organizations for organ transplantation. She also heralded Prof. Haberal as a role-model who enjoys all the necessary features of excellence and can be followed by medical students, in particular the students at BAU to enrich their academic and research skills.
Prof. Haberal, then, gave a presentation of the various landmarks of his career. He started with his own early beginnings in transplantation, where he worked on tests using animals and corpses. He explained the difficulties he faced in making others accept the idea, for he needed a team that had faith and trust in the medical and professional mission he was undertaking. Time was another factor that helped to achieve one success after the other, which led to the visibility of the Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation (MESOT) according to Haberal, the rate of organ transplantation is on the rise year after year, and there are many patients waiting for their turn.
The event was concluded with Prof. Adawi presenting Prof. Haberal with a shield of appreciation, honoring his long and outstanding scientific and academic career.
