BAU mourns the death of the former head of the Order of Engineers, and the most prominent founder of the Faculty of Architecture at BAU,Mr. Assem Salam, who passed away leaving behind many achievements that enriched the arts of architecture and urban organization for decades.

The deceased started out with the Faculty of Architecture since its inception in 1962 until his death, where he worked as a lecturer, as an examiner of students’ graduation projects, and as a member
of the Faculty’s Advisory Committee.

The University Council at BAU, which granted the deceased on 10th September 2012 an honorary doctorate in architecture in recognition of his cultural and scientific efforts and contributions, remembers this man, whose loyalty and generosity to this academic edifice grew over the years. His last recommendation to the University was to establish a center for the study of the Arab Islamic Heritage in Architecture, to be instrumental in the enrichment and advancement of debates on heritage and modernity.

In an attempt to fulfill this recommendation, the University has decided to pursue the work of this great man by establishing such a center and offering a postgraduate scholarship under the name of Assem Salam in the field of architecture.
