The Faculty of Architecture marks its Print in the International Super Sky Scrapers Competition

16 December 2015

The Faculty of Architecture at Beirut Arab University – Tripoli Branch participated in an International Competition Open organized by Super Sky Scrapers. The objective of this competition was to create an examination into the design and construction ideas for high-rise architecture and also the dynamic communities within and around them with attention to aesthetics, material, technology, flexibility, adaptability and sustainability.
The competition aimed to seek out the strongest design concepts and proposals that best satisfy the requirements as set out in this brief.
The program challenged participants to design a sky pool hotel skyscraper in La Defense District of the Paris Metropolitan Area.  The competition seeks to explore and investigate the possibility of a high quality sky pool hotel skyscraper development concept, which sets a new high standard contemporary high-rise or tall building design in a key part of the La Defense District in Paris to take advantage of the spectacular view over Paris. It should be a design solution that responds effectively to achieving such a tall and large-scale hotel solution with a Sky pool and one that could become a contemporary icon for the city. The design should be visually and aesthetically engaging in contributing positively with the emphasis on provision of great hotel and leisure facility.
The plot size was 6370 m2 and the total design area was open to participants.

The fourth year architectural students of Beirut Arab University, Tripoli campus, worked on the competition design and program, and both students Abdel Rahman Ghomrawi and Abdallah Jabali were promoted to the finals between 1000 architect from all over the world contesting in the competition. However,  the student Abdel Rahman Ghomrawi was mentioned among the first ten winners of the competition. His project seeks to be compatible with its context whereby it focused on the triangular, sharp edges and pyramid styles of the La Defense buildings. His design was released for the pair of skyscrapers called “Dancing Dragons” and the lily of the valley French legend. The Skyscraper’s concrete shell is the structure of the building and creates a lace-like facade open to light, air, and views.

On the other hand, Abdallah Jabali’s design was built on the concept of glory of France story shown in the formation of buildings with their box units. The skyscraper is a composition of multiple buildings connected together with vertical gardens. Each building has its own vertical/horizontal circulation that can be reached by a main vertical circulation battery. The design gives the opportunity to users to enjoy the view of the city without annoying sun rays. An interactive kinetic façade with a video projection is designed to attract pedestrians and passengers by projecting of events on it. Green roofs exist at different levels of the building collecting rainwater and giving the skyscraper sustainable solution that gives optimum satisfaction of users and surroundings.
